The Nature of Colors
We perceive the world through colors. The sky is blue, the grass is green, and the apple is red. And yet Newton says that colors are not really a part of the things that we see. The sky is not really blue, nor is grass green, nor even the apple red. What the great scientist says is that the colors are merely a reflection of light.
It is commonly known that light contains all the colors of the spectrum that are visible to the human eye. High school experiments with prisms have shown this. When light strikes an object, its surface absorbs some of the colors while it reflects others. In the case of an apple, all colors ranging from orange to violet are soaked up, but the color red is bounced back. Thus, we perceive an apple as red.
If an object reflects all colors, it is seen as white; and, conversely, if it absorbs them all, it becomes black. Many, if not most, objects, however, do not fall within these two extremes. Instead, they reflect some light at varying degrees giving themselves varying colors. In fact, the entire gamut of colors can be produced by combining any two or all of the three additive primary colors –red, green, and blue— in different amounts.
Physicists, however, will tell you that there is really no such thing as a red light from an apple. Light is an electromagnetic radiation that travels in waves as it moves through space. Wavelengths of the radiation vary, but there are certain lengths that are visible to the human eye. This ranges from 380 to 740 nm and are perceived as light. Light itself does not have any color, but the differences in wavelength as seen as such. Those at 380 nm are visible as violet, while those at 740 nm are seen as red, while the numbers in between correspond to the rest of the rainbow colors.

A few hospitals are now also opting for pink scrubs, and not a few theater green rooms, though still designated as such, are not actually painted green.
Attempts to find a physiological basis for the perceived effects of blues and greens have been made. Researchers believe that human eyes are most sensitive to light with wavelengths within the vicinity of 510 nm, that is, those that generate the color green. According to them, this sensitivity stimulates the production of hormones or the circulation of neurotransmitters that enhance mood and improve temperament.
